1.a ) Location and Town History
Location and Town History :
Periyanegamam Town Panchayat is a Ist Grade Town Panchayat, having its office at Periyanegamam in Pollachi Taluk, Coimbatore District. It was originally formed as a Village Panchayat on 10.05.1957 and upgraded as First grade Town Panchayat from 25.07.1965
It is about 45kms away from Coimbatore in the Northwest side. It has road connectivity to the near by towns like Pollachi,Palladam, and Coimbatore.
Periyanegamam is surrounded in the East by Chinnanegamam village panchayat , West by Vaguthampalayam village panchayat, North Kapalakarai village panchayat South by Gondegoundenpalayam village panchayat,
Agriculture is not a predominant activity in this town panchayat jurisdiction for want of water sources. Textile production, particularly a unique type of saree, called “Kora Cotton” is being produced by the people by blending cotton with raw silk.
Apart from large number of small sector handloom and power loom units, there are some big textile units like Laxmi Textiles, Thamarai Mark Textiles, Rokini Textiles, Roja Mark Textiles, Coir Production etc, catering the needs of the local laborers.
Town Administration :
Periyanegamam Town Panchayat was originally formed as a Village Panchayat on 08.10.1955 and upgraded as First grade town panchayat from 25.07.1965, covering an extent of 10.88 sq.km.
The Population of the town is 7,683 as per 2001 Census and the present population is about 9,584. This Panchayat is divided into 15 Wards . The Urban Local body election was held on 15.10.2006 and elected the Chairman and Councilors.
Topography :
The town is located at 15O North latitude and 85O East longitude. The topographical survey and geotechnical investigation has been carried out to obtain requisite information such as ground levels, soil profile, main roads, landmarks and etc.,
Transport linkage :
Periyanegamam Town Panchayat is well connected with the adjoining towns, village, district head quarters and state capital by well laid out system of roads. District roads and town panchayat roads / streets constitute the road system.
Geology and Groundwater Table :
The soil strata in the town is generally hard gravelly soil up to 2m depth, soft Disintegrated Rock from 2 m and 3 m depth, Medium Rock & Dense Medium Rock from 3m to 4m depth, Hard Rock above 4 m depth.
The average ground water table in this town is reported at approximately 200meter in rainy season. The depth increases to 300m during summer season.
Climate and Rainfall :
The average annual rainfall in Coimbatore district is 642 mm of which the Southwest Monsoon contributes nearly 355 mm. The average temperature in this district is a maximum of 35 ºC and minimum of 22 ºC during the winter months of December and January. Like other parts of Tamil Nadu, hot climate prevails during April- May month and humid climate during the rest of the year except December – February, when it is slightly cold.
Population growth :
Periyanegamam is spread over an area of 10.88 sq.km with a 2001 census population of 7683. Population in each decade with the corresponding growth rate is furnished in Table 2.5 It has been observed that during the decade 1991 – 2001.
