West : Angarai LOCATION Lalgudi Town Panchayat is one of the Important Town Panchayat in Tiruchi District. Lalgudi Town is one of the Taluk Head Quarters in Trichy District of Tamilnadu State. This Town is located on the Trichy – Ariyalur Road, 25Km from North East of Trichy 20Km from North East of Srirangam, 21 Km North of Thiruvanaikaval which are the famous Pilgrim centre of Temples. It is located on the Nortern Bank of River Colleron. Its Location is N latitude and E Longitude. The Population as per 2001 Censes 23405 in Lalgudi Town. Further floating population of the town is 10,000 coming from the near by Villages for working. The total area of town is 10.03 sq.Km. Lalgudi town is located at North latitude and east longitude. This town is main center for around 30 hamlets. In extent and as a total Population of 23405 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS The Lalgudi Panchayat which was formed on 1886 as a Village Panchayat and the Panchayat had got gradewise upgradation on the following manner. i) Town panchayat Government Letter No.235/1966 Dt: 12.01.1966 ii) Town panchayat (Selection Grade) Government Letter No.249/1984 Dt: 27.09.1984 This Town panchayat consists of 18 number of wards. CLIMATE CONDITION The climate in the Lalgudi Town panchayat is hot and humid. It is located nearer to the southern bank of river. The average rainfall during a year is 930 mm and the Town panchayat gets rainfall during the south West & North East Monsoon. Average temperature is 23.00 C minimum and 37.00 C is Maximum. Major wind directions are East, Southeast in May and June and of West and North West in October and November. The soil type of this area is alurium and Red soil which is useful for cultivation of Paddy etc. The gravel soil is also found here which are utilized for the cultivation of other dry crops unlike other parts of the Town. HISTORY Since ancient time Lalgudi is one of the most popular City. The ancient temple of SRI SAPTARISHISWARAR TEMPLE is situated in middle of the Lalgudi Town . Lalgudi Town Panchayat is Located on the High way of Trichirappalli to Chithambaram at the distance of an approximately 20 Km from Trichirappalli. The ancient name of Lalgudi was “ THIRUVATHURAI” which was praised and derived from APPAR SWAMYGAL’S slogan “PANDELUVAR THAVATHURAI” by the historical reasons. This precious name was slowly strengthless. In seventeenth century. when the Muslim Emperor MALIQ KABOOR the Great conqueror came to Tamil Nadu. He happened to see the “Gopura” of the Sapdharishiwarar. While it was undergone decoration and painted in red. He visualised it as a “Red Gopura” (Red-Lal and Gopura-Gudi) questioned about it in urudu. The so called name stands out till date.
