INTRODUCTION

           Ponnamaravathy (Ponnamaravathi) is a Town in Pudukkottai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.This small town also holds the status of a taluk. It is located 37 km from District headquarter Pudukkottai and 410 km from State capital Chennai . It was well connected to Trichy and Madurai by roadways. It was a main market center for hundreds of adjoining villages. Farming is the main occupation of the nearby villages. Rice, sugarcane, groundnut, cereals and all kinds of vegetables are cultivated in plenty. There is an oldest siva temple that dates back to thousand years which was under the control of Archaeological Survey of India. Ponnamaravati Taluk is bounded by S. Pudur Taluk towards west, Singampunari Taluk towards west, Kottampatti Taluk towards west, Tiruppathur Taluk towards South . Pudukkottai City, Natham City, Karaikudi City, Sivaganga City are the nearby Cities to Ponnamaravathi. This Place is in the border of the Pudukkottai District and Sivaganga District.

• The town was constituted as 1st Grade Town Panchayat in the year 1944.
• Again in the year 1983, Director of Town Panchayat in Proceedings No.29682/82 /J5 dated: 04.02.1983 upgraded the town Panchayat as Selection GradeTown Panchayat. The town Panchayat was under the Municipal act of 1996.
• In the year 04.06.2004, It was downgraded as Special Village Panchayat.
• Again on 14.7.2006 in G.O.No.55 dated14.7.2006 the Town was upgraded as selection Grade Town Panchayat.

YEAR OF CONSTITUTION

Ponnamaravathy is a Selection Grade Town Panchayat which is located in Ponnamaravathy Taluk, Pudukkottai District and Tamil Nadu. Ponnamaravathy town is located on Ponnamaravathy - Pudukkottai Highways at a distance of 49 km from Pudukkottai.The town was constituted as 1st Grade Town Panchayat in the year 1944.Again in the year 1983, Director of Town Panchayat in Proceedings No.29682/82 /J5 dated: 04.02.1983 upgraded the town Panchayat as Selection GradeTown Panchayat. The town Panchayat was under the Municipal act of 1996. In the year 04.06.2004, It was downgraded as Special Village Panchayat.Again on 14.7.2006 in G.O.No.55 dated14.7.2006 the Town was upgraded as selection Grade Town Panchayat.In this Town Panchayat Municipal Act has been implemented and followed. Total Area of Panchayat 8.60 Total 26.907 of roads, total 20.995km of Storm water drain, Total 15.700 km pipe lines has been maintained by Town Panchayat. This city population is in 1991 Censes 10993 as for 2011 Cense 11776 Present Population is 12493  Total No. of Assessment 5673 Total No. wards 15 This town have fairly healthy climate. The Maximum temperature normally occurs in the month of May while the minimum temperature in winter occurs in December. Water supply scheme formulated by TWAD Board with the help of loan from TUFIDO  for Rs194.38 Lakhs was handed over to the Town Panchayat from   2009-2010.  The Town Panchayat drinking water storage Over Head Tank one capacity 2.00 lakhs located Near Pudupatti, and  another one is valayappatti 2.50 lakhs and another located  Permal kovil street  capacity in 3.00 lakhs. The Town Panchayat has total area 8.60 Sq.km. Total Roads 26.907 km of roads has been maintained by Town Panchayat out of which 20.995 km B.T. road, 20.995km metal roads CC Roads 4.227km and  Earthen Road0.978km.

The small town has public and private schools for primary and higher secondary education. There are also arts and science colleges, polytechnic colleges and engineering colleges nearby. Ponnamaravathy Town Panchayat has a literacy rate of 83.95%, which is much higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy rate is 53.19% and the female literacy rate is 46.80%.

ROADWAYS: Ponnamaravathy is well connected to the towns of Pudukottai, Tiruchirappalli, Karaikudi, Madurai and Dindugul. Private and Government buses are in operation in the town.

RAILWAYS: The nearest railway station to the town is Namanasamuthiram which is a distance of 30 km from the town.

AIRWAYS: The nearest Airport to the town is Trichy, which is at a distance of 75 km from the town.

Bus stand is fully equipped with water supply, sodium vapor street light and pucca toilet and drainage facilities. This bus stand is classified as “C” class bus stand and revenue generated per year by this bus stand around Rs.3.03 Lakhs. Per day 105 buses are plying over the bus stand and around six thousand public are benefited by this.

This Town Panchayat has one bus stand named Kamaraj Bus Stand.  Bus stand with a provision of 24 shops and 12 Bus bays was constructed in the year 1998 under IDSMT Scheme at an estimated cost of Rs.25 Lakhs. Bus stand road is presently renewed with CC pavement under IDSMT scheme.

MAJOR SHANDY

On the day of weekly shandy only cattle’s like bulls, a goat etc comes to markets for sales. In other words cattles shandy plays the major role in weekly shandy. Sea foods like dry fishes of various verities are available in the shandy at cheaper cost. People from various neighbor villages get together for the weekly shandy to consume the commodities.

There is a Weekly Shandy on Tuesday and Saturday  of every week. All grocery Items, Vegetables and Fruits available in the weekly Shandy  at Cheaper Cost. This shandy located at S.No.851/1 at 1.06.0 hechtare Sq.metre.  Near bus stand in ward 6. Merchants from near by villages bring their crops like vegetables, grains etc.,
