HISTORY OF MOHANUR TOWN

 

In the history of Mohanur, at first it is called as “Mugavanur” because it is situated in West of Chola Region and so it seems to be a face of Chola Region.  Mugavan (face) + Urr (Town) = Mugavanur.  Later it becomes “Mohanur “ and still possess the same.  The songs of the Kongu Region are the proof of this town. In “Moover Devaram” the bank of river Cauvery of this town is stated beautifully as “Kongu Thenkumari”.  Because of the river Cauvery the land is so fertile.  Agriculture is the backbone of this town. 

The main cultivation of crops are Paddy, Sugarcane, Plantain, Green Petal and Korai crops.  These things are sent to various places not only in Tamil Nadu but also to Karnataka, Andhra and other North Indian Cities.  This town is roughly 3 square K.M.

             In this town the founder of “kalkandu” Newspaper, Tamilvanan lived here and “Siledai  Chittar”, ayya  K.V.Jaganathan was grown up here.  Also the famous “Namakkal Kavignar V.Ramalingam” was born here who called as ‘Sudhesikavi’ is a glory of this town.  

 


Geographical Features:   Climate

 

  This town experience a medium temperature.  It experience a very high temperature during the months of April, May and June.  It  gets rainfall from both South-West Monsoon and North-East Monsoon.  The rainfall may be heavy during the months of August and November.

 

LOCATION

 

Mohanur  is situated on the banks of river Cauvery.  It is located at a distance of 70 kilo meters South of Salem.

 

Mohanur, a Selection Grade Town Panchayat, is located in the South West Part of Namakkal District and is between Namakkal and Karur Municipal Towns.  It is located at a distance of 24 Kilometres from Pugalur which is the nearest Railway Station.  The town is well connected by Bus-routes with adjoining urban centres namely Namakkal, Karur, Trichy and Salem.  The River Cauvery is on the Southern side of the Town limit.  The Population of the town as per 1991 census was 12164, 2001 census was 12468, 2011 Cenus was 16313. The town is an important centre for the Green  Petal leaves export.  Petal Leaves produced along the banks of of Cauvery are brought to this place for sorting, packing and export to various places.

 

 TOWN ADMINISTRATION

 

            Mohanur Town Panchayat was constituted on 1961 as Ist Grade Town Panchayat and further it was upgraded to Selection Grade from 1983 and  functioning as such till date. The extent of the Town Panchayat is 3.00 Sq.K.M.  The population of the Town Panchayat is 16313 as per 2011 census, consisting 7992 men and 8321 women.

            The town was delimited to 15 Administration wards.  The Urban local Body elections were held on 19.10.2011 for the posts of Chairman and 15 wards Town Panchayat Councillors.

 

 

POLITICAL WING

 

            The Town Panchayat council is the Political arm of the Town Panchayat consists of 15 elected councillors each representing a ward.  The Chairman heads Town Panchayat council which performs its duties as per the provisions of the District Municipalities Act 1920.  The Political wing provides direction to the Town Panchayat and performs its functions through a set of committees constituted for different purposes.

 

EXECUTIVE WING

            The Executive wing is responsible for day to day operations of the Town Panchayat and is headed by the Executive Officer.  The Executive Officer is the Administrative head of the Town Panchayat functional department.

The ‘C’ Class Town Panchayat Bus stand is having 10 Nos of bus bays in an area of 4795 Sq.Mt. In this Bus Stand there are 21 Nos of Route Buses, 31 Nos  of  Town Buses & Mini buses are plying. Bus facilities are available to various places from this town. 

 

CLIMATE CONDITION

SOIL CONDITION

 

In and around Mohanur, the soil is black due to alluvial deposits with red sub-soil.  The soils are generally black clay or black loam, black sand, loamy and red sand or gravel.  The red sandy soils are equal to loans in productivity.
