TEMPLE HISTORY

Good natured Kumanan was the chieftain of the region then called Mudhiramalai in the Palani hill range.  Mudhiram was his capital.  He also belongs to the group of the third seven vallals known for their charitable characters.  The region between Palani and Udumalpet was known Kumana Mangalam in those days.  The region was very fertile by the flow of Amaravathi river and the just ruling of Kumanan.

Kumanan took on a pilgrimage to Kasi – now Varanasi – along with those willing to accompany him.  On his return from the Kasi pilgrimage, some questions arose in his mind.  He thought that who will help the people for Kasi Yatra.  Would his heirs do it as he did.  He consulted with his ministers and decided to bring a Shivalinga from Kasi and build a temple and ordered to identify the land for the temple.  This place suited as it had a river and also a cremation ground.  It took one year to bring the Shivalinga in a cart from Kasi to this place.  The construction of the temple was also completed then with due places for other deities.   The Shivalinga Kasi Viswanathar and Mother Kasi Visalakshi were installed on an auspicious day followed by a grand consecration.

The place was then called Kumana Lingam combining the names of Kumana and the Kasi Linga but n the days that followed it changed as Komaralingam.
